Applications require an online submission alongside a hard-copy submission of a score and recording. This award will open again in July 2014.

The Zavod Classical Jazz Fusion Composition award is provided for a work demonstrating a true fusion of classical and jazz styles.

Applications are called from full-time music students at any recognized Australian tertiary institution for the Zavod Classical/Jazz Fusion Award directed by noted Australian pianist/composer Allan Zavod. The award commissions a short work for chamber ensemble (jazz soloist(s) optional) demonstrating a true fusion of classical and jazz styles.

Applicants must submit a short score (min 7 minutes), and the winner is expected to orchestrate the work for possible performance at the University of Melbourne. To be eligible, applicants must have been resident in Australia for two years.


VALUE

The total value of the scholarships offered in 2013 will be approximately $5,000.

CLOSING DATE

Applications for this scholarship open mid-July, and close on 5:00pm AEST, Friday 30 August. .

CRITERIA & ELIGIBILITY

This scholarship is open for award to full-time music students at any recognized Australian tertiary institution.

SELECTION PROCESS

The award is for a work demonstrating a true fusion of classical and jazz styles. Applicants should submit one copy of a finished score for small or large ensemble (between 5-7 minutes), together with a recording (including computer realisation) if available. Works in short score (yet to be orchestrated) are encouraged. Jazz soloist(s) optional.

SUBMISSION PROCESS

You will be required to submit:

  • a list of works. Please see the online submission form to submit.
  • an overview of commissions, publications and performances. Please see the online submission form to submit.
  • a score and matching recording of a 5-7 minute original composition that demonstrates fusion between jazz and classical genres. Please send in hard copy to the address listed below:

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

On receipt of this scholarship, students may be requested to write a letter of thanks to the donors or trustees; may be requested to submit a progress report during the year to donors or trustees; and/or may be asked to fill out a student profile questionnaire.
